We celebrated my 31st birthday last night at Shoya, marking my slow inexorable crawl towards the grave with delicious hokkai-don (sweet shrimp, salmon, roe, sea urchin, scallop over sushi rice), stewed kuro buta pork belly, lots of shochu and Japanese beer, a bottle of gifted-but-illicitly-smuggled-in tequila, and who knows what else. The pictured crowd is easily three or four times the largest amount of white people the restaurant has ever accommodated. Thanks to everyone who made it (and those who wanted to, but couldn’t) and a special thanks Joshua R. for the kick-ass panoramic shot! I love you all.
